Protobit contains a vast amount of modifications that attempt to make Rust more enjoyable for low population, casual, and new players. We also aim to integrate various quality of life features, and make minor balance changes to make Rust feel more like a survival game rather than a PvP-centric game.

All of our changes attempt to feel as closely integrated to the core gameplay of Rust as much as possible, and we set high standards for anything that we have implemented. If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback regarding any modifications that we have made, then we highly encourage you to contact an Operator via Discord so that we can hear your feedback.

This page contains almost all of the modifications that Protobit has made. You may view a summary of our modifications by looking at the section headings via the table of contents.

Shared Blueprints

Unlocked blueprints will be shared to all players within your team.

If a player leaves the team, they will lose access to any blueprints that they have not unlocked themselves, and the remaining team members will lose access to any blueprints that the leaving player had shared to them.

Higher Workbench Taxes

Taxes on tech-treeing blueprints in Workbenches has been heavily increased. Level 2 was increased from 10% to 60%, and Level 3 was increased from 20% to 100%. This change was made to encourage players to explore the map to discover new blueprints, instead of spending Scrap to unlock their desired blueprint through the tech-tree.

We have not disabled the ability for players to tech-tree as we understand that some players may still wish to tech-tree various blueprints. For example, it may be easier to tech-tree a blueprint that you need now (and pay a higher tax) than to explore for the item. Additionally, some items cannot be found outside of the tech-tree.

Offline Raid Protection

Bases can be protected from all incoming damage while all base owners are offline if the Tool Cupboard has been provided with sufficient time in the Protection tab. Some entities are excluded from raid protection (see below for a list).

Base Owners

Players that are authorised to the Tool Cupboard will be marked as base owners. Once a player has been marked as a base owner, they can no longer be removed as an owner, even if they are deauthorised from the Tool Cupboard.

Raid Blocks

Offline raid protection does not apply until all base owners have disconnected from Protobit. If any of the base owners are Raid Blocked, then raid protection will not be applied until after the Raid Block has expired, even if all base owners disconnect from Protobit. Raid Blocks are applied to players when their base has received sufficient damage (e.g. from raiding tools) as well as the player that dealt the damage and their team. Raid Blocks last for 10 minutes, and are reset if any involved player deals additional damage to a base entity.

Protection Time

You receive 1 hour of raid protection time for every 5 minutes you are connected and active on Protobit. The raid protection cost increases with the more players that have previously been authorised on the Tool Cupboard.

Excluded Entities

The following is a list of entities that are excluded from raid protection, and can take damage even if the base is currently being protected.

  • Traps: Shotgun Traps, Flame Turrets, Tesla Coils, Auto Turrets, SAM Sites, and Barricades.
  • Vehicles: Horses, Chickens, Boats, Helicopters, Modular Cars, Bikes, etc.
  • Lootable Containers: Storage Boxes, Barrels, Coffins, etc.
  • All players, including sleeping players.
  • Scientists and other NPCs (non-player characters).
  • Tool Cupboards.
  • Sleeping bags and beds.
  • External Walls, Prison Cell Walls, Chainlink Fences, and their equivalent gates.
  • Twig Building Blocks.

NOTE: Offline raid protection only protects entities against damage. It does not protect against player actions (such as looting unlocked Storage Boxes, or entering your base through an unsecured window). You are required to secure your base properly if you wish to be completely protected from mischievous players.

Increased Day Length

The daytime of in-game Rust days has been increased to 105 minutes. Nighttime remains the same as vanilla at 15 minutes. We understand that most players do not wish to play at nighttime, and we do not wish to add an immersion-breaking /voteday plugin.

You may view the current in-game time with /time.

Improved Night Visibility

Night Light has been significantly buffed to allow players to faintly see up to 50m.

Improved Elevators

Elevators have had their maximum floor limit removed, and can now be stacked infinitely. However, this does not modify how stability affects the height of your base (including Elevators). Elevators have also received a Counter next to the floor control panel, where you can input the floor number that you wish to travel to. The Elevator will also increase it's speed the longer it takes to reach your desired floor.

Improved Sleeping Bags

Sleeping Bags (including Beds, Beach Towels, and Campers) will now have their name set to the grid that it is initially placed in. If a player gives the bag a custom name, then that custom name will be shown instead.

Respawn cooldowns now show as a note above your vitals (bottom-right of your HUD), which includes the name of the Sleeping Bag, along with it's appropriate icon, and time remaining until the next respawn.

Improved Backpacks

Backpacks will now receive items that overflow from your primary player inventory. Items overflow if your inventory is full, or if an existing partial stack of the same item type exists within the backpack. Any game actions that require items to be taken out of your inventory will also consume items from your backpack.

Infinite Demolish Timers

Building blocks and other entities can now always be demolished at any time in the future, as long as you are authorised on a nearby Tool Cupboard. If your are Raid Blocked, then the vanilla demolish timer of 15 minutes after entity placement will take priority.

Entities that cannot be picked up or demolished using a Building Hammer can instead by demolished using /remove. You will be unable to use /remove while you are Raid Blocked.

Entity Demolition / Upgrade Refund

Entities that are demolished, upgraded or removed will have their build cost refunded to you.

Upgrading from Twig doesn't refund the initial wood cost.

Local Chat Channel

Sending messages in the Local chat channel will only show your message to nearby players. If no players are nearby, then you will receive a Nobody is nearby... message. You can switch to different chat channels by pressing Tab while the chat input is opened (press T).

Private Messages

You can send private messages to any player that is currently connected to Protobit with /msg <player> <message...>. Only you and the recipient player will see the message in chat. You can use /reply <message...> to reply to the last person that you sent or received a message from.

Team Chat, Clan Chat, and Private Messages are not automatically enforced (excluding extreme circumstances, such as sharing malware, mass advertising, etc.) by Operators for chat infractions (see Rust:Rules). However, you must ensure that all participating players have consented to the content that you wish to share. Operators will issue punishments if we are informed about chat infractions within Private Messages.

Improved Industrial IO

Industrial IO networks have a higher maximum depth before they refuse to continue transferring items. Additionally, Industrial Conveyors can transfer larger amounts of items at a faster rate.

Improved Horses

Horses no longer ragdoll mounted players during various circumstances, and instead will dismount all players. Horses also take less damage upon impacting a surface.

Improved Furnaces

Furnaces will automatically extinguish themselves once all input items have finished cooking. If a Furnace is lit while no input items are present, it will instead disable this feature and will indefinitely cook until a player manually extinguishes it.

Improved Spoilables

Spoilable items can now be stacked together, with their spoil time being averaged among the involved stacks.

Improved Wolves

Wolves are now limited to a maximum of 3 wolves per pack, and will engage other wolves if they are not within the same pack.

RF-Controlled Boomboxes

Boomboxes can be connected to an RF Broadcaster's input to broadcasting it's configuration (playback state, cassette, and radio station) to an RF frequency. Any boomboxes that are powered through RF Receivers listening on the same frequency will copy the broadcaster's configuration.

Connection Messages

Messages will be broadcasted in every player's chat when another player connects or disconnects from Protobit. The disconnection reason (if available) will also be present.

You can also use /list to retrieve a list of all online players, along with a count of connecting, queued, and sleeping players.

Removed Deployable Pickup Penalty

Deployables will no longer receive a damage penalty when picked up with a Building Hammer.

SAM Site Map Markers

SAM Sites that are configured to target all aerial vehicles will be marked on all players' maps with a faint red circle. SAM Sites that are in Defender Mode, not receiving sufficient power input, or are out of ammo do not show map markers.

SAM Site Helicopter Radar Warnings

Helicopters will receive radar warnings when they are approaching a SAM Site's targeting range, and receive radar lock alerts when they are actively being targeted by a SAM Site.

Helicopter Engine Off

When piloting helicopters, you can turn off the engine when near the ground by holding Throttle Down. The helicopter will not turn off it's engine if you are in Ground Control Mode (enabled by holding Duck).

Boat Engine Off

Boats will automatically turn off their engines when all players have dismounted.

Reforestation

Trees will regrow more frequently than in vanilla to help prevent the map from looking barren.

Improved Scrap Transport Helicopter

Scrap Transport Helicopters now contain two storage boxes, each containing 6 rows of available storage. A Barbecue is also present.

You can use /sil <url> while looking at a sign to download an image from <url> and place it on the sign. If your image URL is too long, you may instead press F1 and run sil <url>.

Popular image hosting sites such as Imgur may heavily restrict datacenter IP addresses, and will cause your image to fail to download. It is recommended to use alternative image hosting sites, or you may contact an Operator to request them to host an image on a URL for you.

Images are limited to 100 megabytes each. If you require a larger download limit then you may contact an Operator for assistance.

NOTE: You must adhere to all rules found in Rust:Rules while using this feature. Failure to do so may restrict your sign usage, or result in Level 2 or Level 3 infractions.

Box Sorting

All storage containers have received a Sort button on the top-right of the GUI, along with an order indicator (identified by a C for Category, or a N for Name). Clicking the Sort button will sort all items within the storage container. Clicking the order indicator will rotate the current sort order.

Removed Event Notifications

Notifications that are sent to players when an event occurs (such as Oil Rigs resetting, Cargo Ship spawning, Patrol Helicopter spawning, etc.) have been disabled. Various radio frequencies have also been added that will be broadcast on when one of these events occur.

Players are encouraged to instead setup electrical circuits containing a Smart Alarm and a RF Receiver that is listening to the desired event frequency (which can be found in-game at monuments that may relate to the event).

Shorter Patrol Helicopter Duration

Patrol Helicopter only patrols the map for 15 minutes, compared to 30 minutes in vanilla.

Increased Despawn Time

Items now take 6x as long to despawn compared to vanilla. Corpses also now take 30 minutes to despawn, compared to 5 minutes in vanilla. Burn damage of corpses has also been decreased to help prevent fireballs from destroying corpses.

Vehicle Decay Upkeep

Vehicles will no longer receive decay damage if they are within a Building Privilege.

CH47 Locked Crates

CH47 can only drop a Locked Crate if one doesn't already exist on the map. Additionally, Locked Crates dropped by CH47 will no longer despawn after a time period has passed.

Pumpjack Processing Speed

Pumpjacks have had their processing rate increased by 2.5x.
